At Hale Cosmeceuticals, we’re obviously passionate about skin health. That’s why our R & D team has spent so much time perfecting our formulas. But skin health isn’t just achieved by what you put on your skin. Skin health is nurtured from the inside out, too, with a healthy, balanced diet. And a diet that includes strawberries is even better!

May is National Strawberry Month, and there’s a lot about strawberries to celebrate.

Natural Sun Protection

Strawberries are packed with nutrients: vitamin C, folate, manganese and fiber. They’re also high in anthocyanin content. Anthocyanins are phytonutrients that give plants their rich colors—usually reds, purples and blues. These chemical compounds play a key role in protecting plants from sun damage. And when you eat them, you get the benefit of natural sun protection, too.

We’re not saying that if you eat strawberries that you can pass on the sunscreen. Sunblock and sunscreen are always a must. But, when you incorporate strawberries (and other richly colored berries), your body has the stuff it needs to resist the oxidative damage caused by UV radiation.

Skin Repair

When we said strawberries are packed with vitamin C, we weren’t exaggerating. One cup of strawberries contains up to 130% of the recommended daily amount of vitamin C! And do you know what that means for your skin? Antioxidants to the rescue!

Antioxidants are one of the keys to anti-aging. Antioxidants bind to free radicals, preventing them from damaging other cells and tissues. In the skin, antioxidants protect collagen and elastin fibers that keep your skin firm and resilient. Vitamin C is also involved in the process of collagen production. In short, vitamin C helps your skin resist sagging, and it helps improve texture to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Skin Hydration

For a berry that has so much skin health “stuff” packed inside, it’s amazing to find out that they’re really mostly water. Strawberries are over 75% water, and foods that are high in water content help you to stay hydrated. Water that you drink is largely passed through your system, never making it to the cells. Getting your eight glasses a day is still important, of course, because it helps the body detoxify. But, the bulk of water that gets delivered to your cells comes from food that must be broken down through the digestive process, and that means strawberries are an excellent food to promote skin cell hydration, which enhances a youthful complexion.

Skin Health is in Season

There’s a reason May is National Strawberry Month—because strawberries are in season now! You can get fresh strawberries from your local growers between April and June. However, the freezer section at your grocer will have the same red, heart-shaped skin health promoting beauties year round. So add strawberries to your skin health-promoting grocery list and indulge in sweetness for your tongue and your skin!

Reflect on your inner beauty.

Last month was Stress Awareness Month, a time we are encouraged to reflect upon the pace of our lives, our choices in response to stressful situations and, hopefully resolve to do something that helps us achieve a sense of balance. It doesn’t take much searching to find out that meditation is a practice encouraged to help people disconnect from the craziness outside and nurture a sense of peace within. But for those new to meditation, figuring out the what, when and how of practicing can be challenging, especially when everyone else makes it look and sound so easy.

The truth is meditation takes work, but it is work well worth the effort. And some practical tips can help you nurture a practice that nurtures your health and well-being.

Time and Place

There are different traditions and styles of meditations that have slightly different purposes and lessons to teach. However, all meditation practices are designed to reconnect you with you, and that requires disconnecting from everything outside of you.

To really disconnect, you need to give yourself the space and time to experience nothing more than the sensations of your body. To do that means you need to eliminate (or at least minimize) outside distractions—i.e., electronic devices, food, noise, etc. You will also need to avoid the distraction of bodily discomfort by finding a comfortable seated position. (Of course you can meditate lying down, but in a fully reclined position, it’s really easy to drift off into sleep, and that’s not the same as meditation.)

You can also train your body to recognize when it’s time for meditation by practicing in the same location and at the same time of day every day. It is also a good idea to allow yourself time to ease out of meditation and back into the daily grind. Abruptly going from the quiet of your mind and body to the hustle and bustle of work, school, family life, etc. is jarring to your nervous system. Allow yourself a few minutes post-meditation to read, stretch, etc. to mentally prepare to reenter the world outside.

Setting Goals

The benefits of meditation are not necessarily in direct proportion to the amount of time you can devote to the practice. That’s good news for busy people. It means that meditation can be a beneficial stress management strategy and spiritually uplifting practice even if you can only practice for five to ten minutes a day…but it does have to be practiced every day, so make that Goal #1: carving out time every day to meditate.

Once you’ve dedicated the time and space, you can set new goals to deepen your practice and your awareness. One goal could be to become aware sooner of when your mind drifts away from the present. A gentle reminder may be the question “Here or away?” When you wonder if your focus is in the here and now or somewhere else, that is a good time to re-focus on your breath and your whole body sensations.

Reflecting Outside Meditation

Meditation is a time and place just for you, but you and your practice should not get lost in the shuffle of everyday life. Take time when you are not meditating to reflect upon your practice—what is working for you? What isn’t? What benefits are you experiencing? What goals would you like to set deepen your practice?

When it comes to developing and nurturing a meditation practice, you’re never alone. There are tons of blogs, books, workshops, teachers, etc. who can help you explore different meditation styles, explore ways to deepen your practice and provide practical tips on how to make meditation work in your schedule and apply what you learn to all kinds of situations. The biggest challenge is usually starting. Carve out the time to nurture your meditation practice so that you can reap the benefits.

<img class="size-full wp-image-1976" alt="If you have any suspicions of skin cancer please see your dermatologist.
May is the harbinger of summer. The end of the school year and the rising temperatures let us know that months of outdoor play are on their way. But soaking up all that sun can cause damage to your skin. When it comes to UV radiation, it’s better to be safe than sorry. So, it’s a good thing that May is also designated Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. When you know the early signs of skin cancer, you can seek treatment when most skin cancers are curable.

What to Look For

Spots of color—moles, freckles and skin tags—are common and often harmless. However, some spots may indicate abnormal cell growth that may need to be watched or arrested. When on the watch for early signs of skin cancer, know your ABCDEs.

Asymmetry—a spot cannot be visually bisected into two identical halves

Border—a spot has uneven (raised, scalloped or notched) borders

Color—a spot is unevenly colored (colors may range from red, to different shades of brown and even blue)

Diameter—a spot is larger than ¼”

Evolving—a spot changes shape, size or color

If a spot on your skin shows any of these characteristics, you have a wound that is not healing properly or you have any spot that begins to itch or bleed, you should schedule an appointment with your doctor or dermatologist for further examination.

How to Be on the Lookout

In order to identify suspicious spots, you need to actually examine your skin…and regularly to observe if any spots change size, shape or color. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends monthly full body self exams.

Because UV radiation doesn’t just affect skin in easily visible areas, you need to examine hard to see and reach places, too, and that can be challenging. The Skin Cancer Foundation provides step-by-step directions for performing a thorough exam. Once it becomes a habit, self-exams should only take about ten minutes.

If You Spot a Spot

There are three main types of skin cancer to be on the watch for:

Basal cell carcinoma—abnormal, uncontrolled cell growth that affects the deepest layer of the epidermis. Basal cell carcinomas often look like red patches or open sores, but these rarely spread. However, basal cell carcinomas should be treated early to prevent them from growing, which can lead to disfigurement or scarring.

Squamous cell carcinoma—abnormal, uncontrolled cell growth that affects the cells that compose the upper layers of the epidermis. Squamous cell carcinomas may present as scaly red patches, open sores or elevated growths with a central depression. Squamous cell carcinomas may cause disfigurement if allowed to grow and may be deadly if left untreated.

Melanoma—mutations in skin cells that lead to the development of malignant tumors. Melanoma often resembles moles and may even develop in existing moles. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and may metastasize to surrounding tissues, so early treatment is crucial.

If you find any spot that falls under the ABCDEs of early detection, don’t panic and don’t wait to diagnose the spot yourself. Schedule an appointment with your doctor or dermatologist for further examination. Some spots may be pre-cancerous, meaning they do not require treatment, only diligent sun protection and vigilant observation for changes.

This week we move into May—Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. Since the majority of skin cancers are the result of UV radiation (over) exposure, the best skin cancer prevention is sun protection…and as your skin health company, it’s our job to make sure you have the information you need to keep yourself sun-safe.

Understanding UV Radiation

The sun delivers an incredible amount of light energy to Earth. Some of it we can see because it’s on the visible light spectrum—it’s what allows us to see a white clouds against a blue sky, green grass, black crows and the myriad colors in between. But some light energy isn’t visible—the waves are either too slow or too fast to be perceived by the human eye. Ultraviolet radiation is part of the too-fast-to-see-it light spectrum.

But not all UV radiation travels at the same speed, and the frequency of UV radiation determines how it affects our skin.

UVA rays has the longest wave frequency, which makes them less intense but also better able to penetrate barriers, including the ozone layer and glass. That means that we are exposed to UVA radiation throughout the year, even inside buildings and cars. This frequency can penetrate more deeply into our skin. While it usually doesn’t cause immediate irritation like UVB rays (which is why it is the primary UV radiation used in indoor tanning beds), it does incite oxidative stress linked to abnormal cell growth.

UVB rays are shorter than UVA rays. Because of the angle at which they hit the ozone layer, they are mostly deflected during winter months. However, they are more intense, thus the primary culprits behind summertime sunburns.

Physical Sun Protection

Proper sun protection entails limiting UVA and UVB exposure. The most effective way to do that is to physically block skin’s direct exposure to sunlight with clothing and accessories, including:

• A broad-brimmed hat
• UV-blocking sunglasses
• Long sleeves and pants

During warmer summer months, clothing that provides physical sun protection just isn’t practical. That’s when you need to shift to chemical sun protection.

Chemical Sun Protection

Chemical sun protection involves sun blocks and sun screens applied to the skin.

Sun block prevents UV radiation from penetrating your skin by creating a chemical barrier that reflects UV rays. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are two of the most common minerals that provide sun block protection, and these ingredients are more commonly being incorporated into mineral makeup to provide some SPF protection.
Sun screen limits the oxidative damage UV radiation can wreak on skin cells and components of the extracellular matrix by trapping UV radiation at the skin’s surface and neutralizing free radicals. Common chemical sunscreens include:

• Avobenzone
• Octyl Methoxycinnamate (OMC)
• Oxybenzone

In order to provide effective sun protection, chemical blocks and screens must be applied in adequate amounts—approximately an ounce (golf ball-sized amount) to cover exposed parts of your body. You must also get sunblock/sunscreen that provides an adequate level of protection—i.e. SPF 15 or higher. (We’ll explore SPF values in depth later).

Finding a Balance

Melanoma and skin cancer prevention should not make you afraid to get out and enjoy the sunshine. Hiding from the sun can actually result in or exacerbate a vitamin D deficiency, which comes with a host of adverse health effects all its own. The key is to responsibly enjoy your sunshine.

When you know you’re going to be outside:

• Seek shade.
• Cover up (as long as it’s comfortable).
• Apply and re-apply sunblock/sunscreen liberally.

If you didn’t adequately protect yourself and you’re left red and raw, treat your sunburn and nourish sun-damaged skin with an antioxidant-rich moisturizer.

You can always eat your sun protection, too. Dark, colorful foods are rich in phytonutrients that protect plants from UV radiation, and they deliver antioxidants that can help your body do the same.

If you discover any suspicious-looking spots on your skin, see your healthcare provider. Early detection leads to the best prognosis for melanoma and skin cancer.

Every year we as a nation (and a global community) observe April 22nd as Earth Day…but we know that to really make a positive difference to our planet’s health, every day must be Earth Day. At Hale Cosmeceuticals, there are a number of things we do every day in order to be your earth-friendly skin health company.

No Boxes

Recently, Hale Cosmeceuticals took a big step toward sustainability—we stopped putting everything in boxes. Of course, your quality skin care products will be shipped in a box, but when you open it, you’ll notice a shocking lack of cardboard.

By eliminating boxes, we are saving 12.5 tons of cardboard from being added to landfills each year. That means that we are also freeing up 41.25 cubic yards of landfill space and saving 213 trees! And by eliminating cardboard, we are also eliminating our dependence on 575 gallons of oil and 87,500 gallons of water every year.

No Animal Testing

We share the planet with millions of species of animals—some cuddly, some not-so-cuddly but necessary to their ecosystems nonetheless. Our need for quality skin care cannot come at their expense. That’s why Hale Cosmeceuticals has always been committed to humane skin care product development. We perform our own research and development to formulate and refine our products, but they have never and never will be tested on animals.

No Crazy Chemicals

Nature provides a number of mechanisms to protect herself and preserve the delicate balances needed to sustain life. For instance, plants contain phytochemicals to protect them from the sun. Other compounds retain moisture and preserve adequate hydration. Instead of trying to recreate what Nature has already provided, we use naturally-derived, plant-based ingredients as much as possible.

No Compromise

You don’t have to choose between the best quality skin health products or skin health products from an earth-friendly company. When you select any Hale Cosmeceuticals product, you get both. Our mission is to make high quality skin care affordable, but we are also committed to making sure that quality and affordability do not come at the cost of sustainability.

To find the skin care products that are right for your skin type, skin care goals and your green-consciousness, call us! 877-913-4893

All-natural…vegan…clinically proven…there are hundreds of claims that skin care companies make about their products—some true, some just clever marketing spin. You want to be an educated consumer and be able to know for yourself by reading the ingredients whether or not a product will work for your skin type and do what the package says it will do.

The skin health experts at Hale Cosmeceuticals want to help, so we’re continuing our Skin Care Vocabulary series to explore five more common active ingredients:

Alcohol (SD). Not all alcohol is for drinking. SD (which stands for specially denatured) alcohol is commonly used as a delivery vehicle for other active ingredients. Alcohol is lipid-soluble, so it can penetrate pores, dissolve oil and allow other compounds that are bound to it to be delivered deeper into your skin. Alcohol is particularly effective for toners and other acne-fighting products.

Aloe Barbadensis. Aloe barbadensis is the Latin name for aloe vera, which has been used for natural moisturizing and healing for centuries. Aloe has the same pH as the skin, which makes it very soothing, particularly for sensitive skin and skin inflamed by conditions like psoriasis or sun overexposure (i.e. sunburn).

Caffeine. We usually associate caffeine with drinks like coffee, tea and soda that we reach for to fight of drowsiness. But in addition to the stimulating effect of caffeine, this drug is also a common vasoconstrictor—it causes blood vessels to constrict, limiting blood flow. Less blood flow beneath thin and delicate tissues means less redness and puffiness, making caffeine effective in under-eye creams and serums. Vasoconstriction also diminishes the appearance of cellulite.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). Also known as its more scientific-sounding name Ubiquinone, CoQ10 is a powerful antioxidant, which makes it a powerful ingredient in anti-aging skin care formulas. By neutralizing free radicals, CoQ10 preserves health skin cell function and youthful firm texture.

Jojoba Oil. Jojoba oil is similar in chemical structure to natural oils produced by your skin, so it is an effective moisturizer because it can penetrate without clogging pores. But jojoba oil is even more valuable as a skin care formula ingredient because it is incredibly stable—it does resists degradation when exposed to heat, so its properties remain intact after heat processing (or when stored on a shelf in a steamy bathroom).

Stay tuned for the next installment of common active ingredients and continue to build your skin care know how! If you have any questions about the active ingredients in any of our formulas, please contact us to ask. We are happy to provide you with more information and help you select the best products for your skin type and skin care goals.

Popular culture is not always the best source of nutrition information. Although well-meaning, blogs, articles, talk shows, etc. that try to distill the complex interplay of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients into “Eat this, not that” info bites can often lead us to oversimplify what’s good and bad for us. For example: fat is bad; a fat-free diet is good.

But such a simplistic view of a “balanced diet” has lead us to cut out essential nutrients, like essential fatty acids. And their absence can be seen in less than optimal skin health.

Chemistry 101

Chemically speaking, a fatty acid is a carbon-based molecule with a chain of 4 to 28 carbon atoms. They are classified as short-, medium- or long-chain fatty acids depending on the number of carbon atoms in the “tail.” Essential fatty acids are fatty acids that the human body cannot synthesize on its own but needs for biological functions. The only way to get them is from food.

There are really only two essential fatty acids:

Alpha-linolenic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid)

Linoleic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid)

(The classification of essential fatty acids into omega groups is based on characteristics of their chemical structure. For instance, omega-3s are polyunsaturated whereas omega-6s are unsaturated, and the double bonds in the chain occur at different points on the tail.)

Skin Health Essential

Essential fatty acids play an integral role in several biological functions, many of which directly impact skin health. Essential fatty acids are necessary elements for preserving cell wall integrity and conducting cell transference—importing nutrients into cells and eliminating wastes out of them.

When cells get the essential fatty acids they need, cell membranes provide strong barriers that prevent water loss. Adequate water retention allows skin cells to remain plump, which diminishes fine lines and wrinkles and contributes to a more youthful appearance. Essential fatty acids also help dissolve fatty deposits, like sebum, which can lead to clogged pores and acne break outs.

Research is beginning to uncover the role essential fatty acids play in the inflammatory response. Essential fatty acids are components of eicosanoids—signaling molecules that either incite or inhibit the inflammatory response. A lack of omega-3 essential fatty acids often results in poor anti-inflammatory signaling, which allows the inflammatory response to continue unchecked. On the skin, chronic inflammation may present as dry, irritated (red), acne-prone skin.

Balanced Diet for EFA Balance

Most modern diets do not provide the proper balance of essential fatty acids. Most diets are heavy on omega-6 fatty acids, which can be found in poultry and grains, which are themselves staples of many refined food products. Omega-3 fatty acids, however, come from fatty fish and other plant sources, and the typical American diet contains much fewer of such foods.

To boost your omega-3 intake to achieve a better balance in essential fatty acids, boost your intake of:

Flax seeds

Safflower oil

Walnuts

Salmon

Mackerel

Sardines

Soy

If you do choose to boost your omega-3s through fishy sources, make sure to select sustainably caught fish and fish from populations that have not been identified as having high mercury content (wild-caught Alaskan and Pacific Coast salmon, for instance).

Every day we encounter millions of stimuli that require our responses, so stress is inevitable. How we respond to it, however, is a choice. Unfortunately, we usually do not take the time to think about our options; we just react. For instance, think about what happens when your phone rings…do you take a second to look who’s calling and what your options are? Probably not. Most of the time we exercise something like a Pavlovian response—the phone rings, we answer.

That unconscious reacting is what makes us feel like our lives are so out of control, and that I’m-too-busy way of life is reflected in our skin health. There are five common signs that your skin is feeling as stressed out as you are, but, luckily, simple changes and additions to your skin care regimen can help you manage the effects of stress on your skin.

Skin Stress Indicator #1: Dryness

If your skin has flaky and/or scaly patches, feels tight (especially when you wiggle your nose or raise your eyebrows) or looks dull, you are seeing and feeling the effects of dryness.

Why It Happens: Cortisol, the “stress hormone,” negatively impacts your skin’s ability to retain water, leaving your cells parched.

What You Can Do about It: You can nourish dry skin from inside and outside by:

Consuming adequate amounts of water to give your body the raw materials it needs to replenish moisture. (Tip: eating your water in fresh fruits and vegetables more effectively replenishes moisture at the cellular level.)

Washing your face with a gentle (i.e. neutral or alkaline pH) cleanser.

Washing your face with lukewarm water to minimize evaporative water loss at your skin’s surface

Moisturizing your face while skin is still damp to lock in moisture

Skin Stress Indicator #2: Fine Lines

Of course your face has to crease to accommodate muscle movements, but those creases should all but disappear when muscles are relaxed. Crow’s feet, smile lines and a creased brow when you’re face is at rest are signs of stress.

Why It Happens: The hormones involved in the “fight or flight” stress response increase blood sugar levels to provide more energy to muscles. However, the increased blood sugar levels also increase the rate of glycation—the process by which sugar molecules bond to other compounds, like collagen and elastin fibers. The breakdown of collagen and elastin fibers means that your skin is less plump, firm or resilient.

What You Can Do about It: Injections—fillers or Botox—can make fine lines almost disappear immediately (but temporarily), but you can also diminish fine lines by fighting the glycation process. Antioxidants like vitamins A (retinol), C and E bind to sugar compounds, rendering them harmless to your collagen and elastin fibers, helping your retain your skin’s natural firm texture and fullness. Serums, like our Vitamin C and Ferulic Acid serum, and thick moisturizers usually make the best antioxidant delivery vehicles.

Skin Stress Indicator #3: Redness

A flushed face is a flustered face. Stress has even been shown to exacerbate rosacea.

Why It Happens: Because the stress response involves increasing blood flow, capillaries below thin skin, like the delicate skin on your face, are near-bursting (or possibly even bursting) with the rush, making you appear ruddier.

What You Can Do about It: Incorporating calming skin care products into your daily regimen can help relieve some of the redness. Look for moisturizers with aloe barbadensis, licorice root extract, oatmeal and/or other naturally soothing ingredients.

Skin Stress Indicator #4: Acne

Acne can take many forms from easy-to-cover blackheads or whiteheads to more painful (and, unfortunately, more noticeable) cysts.

Why It Happens: Cortisol and other hormones released as part of the stress response are pro-inflammatories—they increase blood flow to damaged tissues to speed healing. But when you are under chronic stress, your body is over-taxed and just finish the work of repairing damaged tissues or fighting off pathogens.

What You Can Do about It: Adult acne is proving more difficult to treat topically, meaning effective and lasting treatment has to come from the inside out and may require more intensive stress management strategies and/or nutritional consultation to balance hormones. However, you can minimize exacerbating acne with a skin care regimen that effectively but gently exfoliates. Salicylic acid encourages quicker cell turnover and, as a pro-drug to aspirin, is naturally anti-inflammatory. You can also limit poor-clogging potential by using non-comedogenic skin care products.

Skin Stress Indicator #5: Tired Eyes

Stress often means sleepless nights, and sleepless nights mean puffy and dark eyes.

Why It Happens: Sleep gives our bodies the time to rejuvenate. Without it, our tissues are not able to repair themselves, replenish moisture and nutrients, and for skin as sensitive and delicate as that under-eye, the effects of compromised restoration become visible much more quickly.

What You Can Do about It: The best solution is to get more (and more restful sleep). But to minimize the appearance of sleep deprivation, eye creams or gels that help tone and thicken delicate under-eye skin can help you appear more bright-eyed. (However, visible results from eye creams are often not seen for a few weeks.)

If you’ve ever looked at the list of ingredients on the back of a skin care product, you’ve likely met with more confusion than clarification. It’s true. Ingredients that are good for your skin aren’t always easy to say, let alone spell. But don’t let that stop you from being an educated consumer.

We’ve put together a list of common skin care product ingredients to help you make more informed choices when it comes to caring for the health of your skin. While the list is innumerable, here are five to get you started:

Alpha-hydroxy acid—an ingredient used for its effective exfoliation of dead cells on the skin’s surface. Alpha-hydroxy acid is water soluble and can help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles but must be routinely applied as they do not have a permanent effect.

Beta-hydroxy acid—an ingredient used for its effective exfoliation of dead skin cells that have built up within the pores. Beta-hydroxy acid is not water soluble and is an effective exfoliating ingredient for oily skin.

Ellagic Acid—an antioxidant effective in protecting the skin from cellular damage caused by the sun. Ellagic acid inhibits free radicals from impeding collagen production.

Humic acid—removes toxins from the skin while promoting skin moisture, health, color and clarity.

Hyaluronic acid—also known as hyaluronan (HA), hyaluronic acid is a carbohydrate that naturally occurs in the human body; it is a major constituent of the skin’s extra cellular matrix and fluid in the joint capsules. Hyaluronic acid is known for its water retention properties.

In our effort to make sure consumers are informed when purchasing skincare products, we will continue this series on common active ingredients in the months ahead. Stay tuned!
