    Sunlight Can Damage Your Skin Even in the Winter - Here's What You Can Do About It

    It is a common misconception that once the temperatures start to drop and the snow starts to fall, the sun can't do anymore damage to your skin. That is simply not true. Though it is true that the atmosphere blocks some of the sun's harmful UV rays during the winter, it doesn't block all of it. In fact, in some places throughout the world, the sun's UV rays are almost as strong in the winter as they are in the summer. If you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors this winter, you should be aware of how the sun can harm your complexion and what you can do to protect yourself.

    UV Rays Are Intense at Higher Altitudes

    According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the snow reflects up to 80% of the sun's rays. If you live in an area that sees a lot of snow, or even if you just plan to hit the slopes this season, be sure to keep your sunscreen on hand. Applying sunscreen at proper intervals throughout a winter vacation or day in the snow can prevent premature aging and reduce your risk of developing skin cancer.

    You're Not Safe On Cloudy Days

    The sun's rays are strong, and just because you cannot see them does not mean they can't reach you. Even on cloudy days, harmful UV rays can cause damage to unprotected skin. Some studies even suggest that cloud coverage can enhance the strength of the sun's beams, causing radiation to be more focused and, therefore, more dangerous. Protect your skin even when you can't see the sun by applying sunscreen liberally before heading out.

    Take Additional Precautions

    Every aspect of your body deserves complete winter protection. The MD Anderson Cancer Center suggests taking extra precautions during the wintertime, such as the following:

    • Use lip balm with at least 30 SPF.
    • Cover up with a hat, gloves and long sleeves.
    • Wear sunglasses or snow goggles with 100% UV protection when out on the slopes.
    • As you would in the summer, seek shade between the hours when the sun's UV rays are the strongest, between 10 am and 4 pm.
