How To Transition Your Skincare Routine From Winter to Spring

As the seasons change, most people tend to transition several aspects of their lives along with the shift. They change up their wardrobe, switch to lighter makeup and opt for brighter nail colors. They replace thick flannel blankets with light throws and switch out deep greens and reds for soft yellows and lavender. Yet, for all the changes people make, many fail to address one of the most important needs of all: The needs of their skin.

During the fall and winter months, the skin often becomes dry and cracked, thereby necessitating thick creams and heavy-duty products. However, during the spring and summer months, the opposite happens. Instead of being dehydrated, the skin produces its own moisture. If you continue to use the same, heavy products of the winter months, you risk clogging your pores and dulling your complexion. To maintain a healthy, glowing complexion into the spring and through the summer, give your skincare regime an overhaul. Not sure where to start? We’re glad to help.                                 

  1. Clean Out Your Cabinets

When spring cleaning this year, make it a point to go through your bathroom cabinets and makeup bags. Pay particular attention to expiration dates and toss anything that has survived beyond the marked date. Check your makeup brushes to see if they could either use a deep cleaning or need to be thrown out as well. Old products and dirty makeup brushes can do more harm than good, so this step is important.

Once you’ve tossed everything that’s past its best-used-by date, organize whatever remains into “fall/winter” and “spring/summer” categories. From there, you can decide how much further you want to organize. Some people like to further categorize their products into “makeup,” “moisturizing,” “toning,” “exfoliation,” etc. You may just prefer to throw everything you use into a bin and store the rest in a cabinet. It’s completely up to you.

  1. Change Up Your Moisturizer

Remember how we said your skin will moisten itself from the inside out as the weather heats up? Let your complexion breathe as it does so by ditching the heavy cream-based moisturizer and reaching for something lighter and preferably water-based. Depending on your skin type, you may need more than one moisturizer — one for daytime use and one for at night. If you don’t already have a product you like, test out different ones to find the best consistency for your spring and summer complexion.                                 

  1. Exfoliate Less

Exfoliating during the winter is a must, as the dry weather often leads to dead skin cells. Exfoliation can help scrub those dead skin cells away from your pores and keep them from wreaking havoc on your complexion. However, as temperatures rise and humidity levels increase, your pores open up and become more receptive to products and their effects. This makes it okay to exfoliate less.

  1. Protect Your Skin

This should be part of your skincare regime year-round, but it becomes especially important during the spring and summer. Add SPF to your daily routine. Many skincare companies make this easy to do by incorporating sunscreen into their moisturizers, toners and makeup products. If you’re someone who routinely forgets to lather up, invest in products that pull double duty.

  1. Lighten Up

It’s no secret that heavy foundations can wreak havoc on your skin no matter the time of year. However, this is especially true during the warmer months. To keep your makeup from clogging your pores, switch out your foundation for a BB cream or tinted moisturizer, both of which allow the skin to breathe.

  1. Stay Hydrated

Finally, the best thing you can do for your complexion is to stay hydrated. Drink lots of water, eat your fruits and vegetables, go swimming in freshwater lakes and ponds and take lukewarm showers. After taking a dip — whether to refresh or cleanse yourself — apply moisturizer when your skin is still damp. This will help to lock in the moisture and ensure your skin stays hydrated. 

As you begin to switch out your sweaters for short sleeves and your pants for skirts and dresses, remember that your skin needs a change, too.
