What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic Acid is critical for skin hydration, and more!

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the dermis, the layer of skin immediately under the surface. connective tissue in your body. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring polysaccharide in our body, and acts as a cushioning and lubrication agent for our joints, nerves, hair, skin, and eyes. In the skin of a newborn baby, it’s quite plentiful, but gradually diminishes as we age. In fact, decreasing hyaluronic acid correlates closely with the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It makes sense, then, that by replenishing hyaluronic acid, dry skin is revitalized and refreshed, taking on a more youthful appearance.

Between the layers of the skin, dermis and epidermis, there is the extracellular matrix as well. The Extracellular Matrix (ECM) lends support to skin cells, so it is largely responsible for giving skin its structure. The ECM is made up of fibers—collagen and elastin, primarily—which make skin a firm but stretchy barrier. The ECM also contains other substances that provide nourishment and hydration for the cells and fibers. Hyaluronic acid is one of those substances. Replenishing Hyaluronic acid in the ECM helps support the overall skin structure as well.

Unlike many other HA products, which often contain water, glycerin derivatives, and oils, Hale Cosmeceuticals uses pure hyaluronic acid. And while some other manufacturers source their HA from the combs of roosters, we never use animal products (or engage in animal testing). Our Hyaluronic acid product, Dermist M3HA, has among the lowest trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) values. This means our HA formulation has an incredible ability to retain moisture and prevents water from escaping through the skin's surface.
