If you’ve ever looked at the list of ingredients on the back of a skin care product, you’ve likely met with more confusion than clarification. It’s true. Ingredients that are good for your skin aren’t always easy to say, let alone spell. But don’t let that stop you from being an educated consumer.
We’ve put together a list of common skin care product ingredients to help you make more informed choices when it comes to caring for the health of your skin. While the list is innumerable, here are five to get you started:
Alpha-hydroxy acid—an ingredient used for its effective exfoliation of dead cells on the skin’s surface. Alpha-hydroxy acid is water soluble and can help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles but must be routinely applied as they do not have a permanent effect.
Beta-hydroxy acid—an ingredient used for its effective exfoliation of dead skin cells that have built up within the pores. Beta-hydroxy acid is not water soluble and is an effective exfoliating ingredient for oily skin.
Ellagic Acid—an antioxidant effective in protecting the skin from cellular damage caused by the sun. Ellagic acid inhibits free radicals from impeding collagen production.
Humic acid—removes toxins from the skin while promoting skin moisture, health, color and clarity.
Hyaluronic acid—also known as hyaluronan (HA), hyaluronic acid is a carbohydrate that naturally occurs in the human body; it is a major constituent of the skin’s extra cellular matrix and fluid in the joint capsules. Hyaluronic acid is known for its water retention properties.
