How to Build a Skincare Routine

    Start With Cleanser

As you begin your skincare regimen, you need a clear canvas upon which to work. This is why it is very important that you cleanse your skin first. It does not matter when you start your skincare routine, dirt and other pollutants can accumulate on your skin at any time during the day. Use a good facial cleanser to remove impurities and excessive oil from your face. There are different types of skin cleansers for different types of skin; you must make sure that you use the right one that fits your skin type.

Knowing your skin type can make it much easier to build a routine that works for you. Dry skin may show visible fine lines, patches of dryness, or a tight feeling. Mature skin often tends to be drier and may also show deeper lines and areas of dark pigmentation. Oily skin typically looks shiny through much of the day and may be acne-prone, while sensitive skin can react to products or environmental changes with redness, bumps, or irritation. Many people also have a combination of these concerns, and skin type can change over time.

For some dry and sensitive skin types, cleansing too often can leave skin feeling over-dried. In those cases, it may help to keep cleansing gentle and avoid overdoing it.

    Tone and Balance the skin

Next step is to use a toner that can help restore your skin. The stressors of air, pollution, sun, makeup, and other agents can throw our skin off balance. When the pH of our skin is not balanced, it can result in a weakened barrier and other skin issues. Toners also help balance the pH levels of your skin so that you can have an even skin tone. To use the toner, you can drop some of it on a piece of cotton pad and then apply it to your skin using a dabbing motion. Avoid dragging as that can damage your skin. Many people complain about irritation after using toners as they often rub their skin rather than dabbing it.

Toners can also help reduce the appearance of pores and help your skin look smooth.

    Apply Serums of Your Choice

Once you have deeply cleansed and balanced your skin you can apply any serums you want, and there are many options for you to choose from. Different serums take care of your skin in different ways. Serums are essentially formulas with concentrated delivery of active ingredients to maximize results. Different serums can be used to target different problem areas. For instance, Hyaluronic acid can help with the hydration of your skin and vitamin C can help you reduce oxidative stress and reduce fine lines. A little can go a long way!

Serums can also be chosen based on specific concerns such as uneven skin tone, under-eye puffiness, acne, fine lines, wrinkles, or visible redness. Because they are concentrated formulas, they are typically applied after cleansing and toning, but before heavier creams.

    Eye Creams Go Next

It is very important to care for the skin around your eyes as it is very thin and is susceptible to more damage in comparison to other areas on the face. After you apply serums, you can use eye creams that can help eliminate problems like puffy skin, wrinkles and other fine-lines. Eye creams should be specifically formulated for the delicate skin around the eyes. Carefully massage in the eye cream and move on to the next step.

    Don't Forget To Moisturize

Moisturizing is a very important step in your skincare routine. Moisturizer can help hydrate your skin and give it the suppleness it needs. This is the right time to apply moisturizer as it can help form a protective film on your serums and eye cream so that they work in the best way possible. There are several different kinds of moisturizers you can choose from including gel based and water based moisturizers. Moisturizers can weigh heavy on your skin if you have oily skin, so you must make sure that you use the right one according to your skin type.

Every skin type needs moisturizer, not just dry or mature skin. When skin becomes too dry, it can lead oily skin to produce even more oil. If you have dry or mature skin, a thicker cream may be a better fit, especially at night. If you have oily skin, lighter oil-free or gel-based moisturizers may give you the hydration you need without leaving a greasy feel. You may also prefer a lighter daytime moisturizer and a richer evening cream, since your skin’s needs can be different at the beginning and end of the day.

Finish It Off With a Face Mask

Masks are usually considered optional, and not needed as often as some of the other steps in this regimen. Different masks can help provide exfoliation, hydration, anti-pollution, and detox benefits. Usually you can see tremendous benefits by using a mask only 1-2 times per week.

Depending on your needs, other optional additions to a routine can include a makeup remover before cleansing or an oil cleanser as an extra step to help remove excess oil and buildup before your usual face wash.

As a general rule, skincare products are usually applied from thinnest to thickest, starting with cleansing and finishing with your moisturizer.
